Thirty years for the reason that launch of the Colombian band’s pivotal album, La Pipa de La Paz (The Pipe for Peace), Aterciopelados brings its psychedelic universe to the Tiny Desk. The set’s full with ceramic decorations and a quilted flag handmade by Andrea Echeverri herself.
Once they splashed onto the rock en español scene within the Nineteen Nineties, they weren’t simply the one main band with a lady on the helm — they made songs with unapologetically feminist and environmentalist messages a core a part of their artwork. In a sea of leather-based jacket-clad dudes taking inspiration from their Anglo and European counterparts, Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago did one thing radically completely different: They turned to the folkloric traditions of their native Colombia to blaze a brand new path for Latin different music.
From the lovelorn mellowness of “Bolero Falaz” to the explosive joropo punk of “La Culpable” — cracking jokes in regards to the lack of amplifiers on the Desk simply as simply as they belt lyrics protesting the objectification of ladies’s our bodies — Aterciopelados’ efficiency reveals the band remains to be as colourful and irreverent as ever.
