Expensive Mr. Khosrowshahi:

The Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Data Know-how, and Authorities Innovation is conducting oversight of company practices and the roles of federal businesses that will influence shopper security. Current reporting has highlighted that Uber receives a “report of sexual assault or sexual misconduct in america virtually each eight minutes.”1 Particularly, information protection states that “from 2017 to 2022, a complete of 400,181 Uber journeys resulted in studies of sexual assault and sexual misconduct in america,” a quantity considerably larger than the 12,552 instances beforehand disclosed by Uber.²

This reporting and the prevalence of incidents raises questions on how Uber identifies, responds to, and discloses incidents of sexual assault and sexual misconduct on its platform. The disparity between beforehand disclosed knowledge and up to date reporting raises considerations concerning the accuracy and completeness of security knowledge.³ The Subcommittee is especially involved that underreporting or delayed disclosure of such incidents might hinder policymakers, regulation enforcement, and the general public from absolutely understanding the scope of the issue and making knowledgeable selections.

This concern just isn’t new. Sami’s Legislation, enacted in January 2023, required the U.S. Authorities Accountability Workplace (GAO) to conduct a research on the security steps taken by ridesharing firms associated to rider and driver security. This GAO report, launched in September 2024, discovered that at present accessible knowledge “can not absolutely describe the extent of assaults in [ridesharing] industries.”4
