NPR’s Ailsa Chang speaks with Raina Douris, host of World Cafe at member station WXPN, about Mitski’s new album, Nothing’s About to Occur to Me.
AILSA CHANG, HOST:
If you happen to’ve solely ever heard one sound from the rock artist Mitski, there’s an opportunity it might need been this one.

MITSKI: (Singing) Mother, would you wash my again?
CHANG: (Laughter) That’s Mitski all the best way again in 2015, screaming into her guitar whereas acting at NPR’s Tiny Desk. It went a bit viral at the moment. RAINA DOURIS, BYLINE: Hey.
CHANG: Hey. OK, so I bought to speak to Mitski again in 2018 after I interviewed her. I’ve seen her carry out. I like her. However for these of us who do not know a lot about her, inform us about Mitski’s backstory.

CHANG: Love that tune.
DOURIS: Yeah. And, I imply, after I say that she is not a mainstream artist, that does not imply she would not have an enormous following. She does, and they’re very devoted. MITSKI: (Singing) The white neighborhood cat marking my home. It is presupposed to be my home. However I suppose, in keeping with cats, now it is his home.
(LAUGHTER)
CHANG: It is sort of hilarious (laughter).
DOURIS: I do know. As a cat proprietor, I actually associated to that. The press launch for this album says itself, Mitski explores a wealthy narrative whose primary character is a reclusive lady in an unkempt home. Exterior of her residence, she’s a deviant. Within her residence, she is free.
CHANG: Ooh.
DOURIS: And there is a theme of isolation to those songs and of separation from the skin world, which I discover so attention-grabbing as a result of Mitski has this lively fan base, and she or he has needed to arrange some sturdy boundaries round her private life.
CHANG: So whenever you hearken to this document and also you’re eager about a lady, an artist who has needed to set her personal boundaries, is there a tune that displays that?
DOURIS: The one that actually grabbed me instantly and the one which I have never actually been in a position to cease eager about is a tune known as “Useless Girls.” It begins with the road, would you have got favored me higher if I might died so you might inform my story? And in that tune…
