Earlier than Robert “Sput” Searight counted within the band, he checked out us and stated, “All proper, buckle up!” On 4, Ghost-Be aware ripped a success so funky that each face within the room reflexively assumed and remained in stank place. Yep, this Tiny Desk live performance reeks just like the Mustard n’Onions the band left behind.
Based by Searight and Nate Werth in 2015 as a drum and percussion duo, Ghost-Be aware has advanced into a brilliant group, very similar to Snarky Pet, the instrumental group of which Searight and Werth are former and present members, respectively.
Ghost-Be aware kicks off with “JB’s Out” and “Transfer with a Objective,” funk-soul songs that channel two of their greatest influences, James Brown and Sly & the Household Stone. There is a spirited name and response from the band, punctuated with hits and supported by harmonies. Following Dominique Xavier Taplin’s spacey keyboard intro, Mackenzie Inexperienced sings the funky R&B love letter “Synesthesia.” Searight picks up the tempo on “Be Any individual,” a tribute to James Brown, the Godfather of Soul.
The live performance closes with a love story, “Slim Goodie.” The tune includes a fast rhythm solo by Werth and Searight, earlier than Mackenzie pleads with such fervor, it makes us all yearn for the affections of our personal Slim Goodie, too.
